Yes, all Modiform products are recyclable. However, it is important that the used products end up in the correct waste stream. Not all products should be disposed of with household waste, as sorting options differ. For example, used plastic transport trays should be disposed of with commercial waste.
If black pots end up in household waste, they are not sorted for recycling. This is because household waste sorting typically uses NIR (Near Infrared) detection, which cannot identify materials that contain carbon black. However, if black products end up in commercial waste, the sorting is almost always done manually, allowing black products (such as pots and trays) to be separated for recycling. So the answer to the question is: it depends on the waste stream in which the pots and trays end up.
Recycled plastic is the main component of the products Modiform produces – more than 90% of the materials come from recycled sources. The vast majority of this is from PCR (Post-Consumer Recyclate*) and a much smaller portion from PIR (Post-Industrial Recyclate).
PCR is made from Post-Consumer Waste. This refers to “plastic waste generated from plastic products that have been placed on the market or supplied for distribution, consumption, or use as part of a commercial activity, whether for payment or not.” In other words, these are products or packaging that have been used by consumers or other parties.
Post-Industrial Recyclate, made from Post-Industrial Waste, refers to plastic production waste. Modiform also uses this, but to a lesser extent. This PIR typically comes from another company (for example, a yogurt cup manufacturer).
At the end of December 2024, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) was approved by the European Council and is now final. This means the legislation will officially take effect from February 11, 2025, and the new rules will be gradually implemented across all EU countries. Not all Modiform products fall under the definition of packaging in the PPWR. For example, products used for growing (pots, propagation trays) are excluded.
